Comprehensive Eye Exam

These exams are important for both maintaining excellent eye health and to uncover many symptomless diseases that can affect the eye and threaten vision.  A comprehensive eye exam may include, but is not limited to: a visual acuity test, refraction, slit lamp exam, color blindness test, glaucoma screening, pupil dilation, retinal exam, and a visual fields exam.  These exams usually take an hour, so please plan accordingly.

Contact Lens Fitting Exam

Whether fitting gas permeable hard contact lenses, or daily, 2 week or monthly soft disposable contact lenses, the process still begins with special measurements of the front surface of your eye with an instrument called a keratometer.  This gives your doctor a starting point for determining the proper curvature and size for your individualized contact lenses.  Then a determination of the contact lens type is made based on your glasses prescription and a review of your visual needs.  This may result in soft contacts that are spherical, toric contacts correcting for astigmatism, bifocal or monovision contacts, colored contacts or specialty contact designed to fit irregular corneas.  Next trial lenses may be applied to your eyes and evaluated to judge the fit and your response to the vision and physical comfort of the lenses.  This will be done at each follow up visit to access your compatibility to the trial lenses with increasing hours of lens wear and to ensure no adverse side affects to the contact lenses.  After your doctor is sure your lenses fit properly providing satisfactory vision and comfort and are causing no harm to your eyes, your final contact lens prescription can be written.  Please note that it may take several visits to ensure a proper fit depending on the complexity of your eyes.

Computer Efficiency Exam

The fast paced world we live in has made it mandatory for most people to work on computers for most of the work day and several hours during the evening.  This can leave your eyes strained, fatigued, and dry and your neck muscles stiff.  We offer specific eye exams for this problem.  We perform the necessary vision tests specifically at computer distance and offer lenses that are specifically designed with extensive computer use in mind.  They allow for reduction of the ergonomic stress placed on the neck and eyes, leaving you relaxed and comfortable.

Medical Evaluation and Treatment

An important part of our doctorate training is devoted to emergency and urgent care diagnosis and treatment.  Our doctor is licensed to prescribe topical and oral medications in the treatment of bacterial, viral, and inflammatory eye related problems.  If you have any eye pain, redness or discharge, please contact our office and we will schedule you for the next possible appointment that day.  We can prescribe the needed medications and send the prescription to your pharmacy directly to make it easy as possible.

In addition, a frequent part of our daily practice involves removing foreign objects that have either became embedded in the eye or are stubbornly lodged under the eye lids. The pain of getting an object in your eye, be it a dust particle, eyelash or even something larger can be excruciating.  Symptoms can vary from pain when blinking, to blurred vision, to a constant scratchy feeling or bleeding around the eye.  We specialize in removing the object quickly and we can give drops both before and after the procedure to minimize pain and reduce any infections.  This is covered under majority of medical insurance policies and our office accepts most major health insurance for these services.  If it is an emergency, we will see you as soon as possible, so please do not hesitate to call us.

Cataract Evaluation

As we age, the lens in our eye can become cloudy, leading to an impairment of your vision.  Our office can work with you to both diagnose and manage your cataract.  If the need eventually arises to have the cataract removed, we can recommend a trusted local surgeon for the operation.  Our doctor will quiet all your fears or concerns about the surgery as we perform all the preoperative and postoperative care in our office.  The proper treatment and management of your cataract can lead to a whole new world of vision, so please do not hesitate to call us to schedule an appointment.

Diabetic Eye Exam

It is vital that a person diagnosed with diabetes has a comprehensive eye exam every year.  Diabetes can lead to the development of new blood vessels in the back of the eye, which over time may leak and cause damage to the retina, resulting in vision loss.  If caught early enough, changes in diet or medication may alter the advancement of these dangers and help protect your sight.  Our doctor communicate with your primary care physicians to relay findings which assist your physician in determining the number and types of medications necessary to maintain proper diabetic control.  In the case of advanced diabetic eye disease, we work closely with board certified retinal specialists in the area to refer patients for sight saving laser treatment and or Avastin injections.  It is our commitment to explain compassionately the diabetic retinal status and treatment options when necessary.

Glaucoma Eye Exam

Glaucoma is a problem when the optic nerve inside your eye is damaged from either having too high of a fluid pressure and or having many of the other risk factors involved.  This is called "the silent thief" as vision is lost slowly through destruction of the nerve fibers comprizing the optic nerve.  This first results in subtle peripheral vision deficits and can, if not controlled, lead to eventual blindness.  We screen for glaucoma during our annual comprehensive eye examinations and if a suspicion arises, we will recommend that you return for further in depth glaucoma testing.  This testing will include extensive peripheral field analysis, 3D optic nerve digital photography, laser light imaging and measurements of the optic nerve as well as eye pressure profiles taken during different times of the day.  From these and other test results, we will determine whether you are presently diagnosed with glaucoma, a glaucoma suspect, or simply demostrate glaucome-like qualities but are completely normal for you.  Once the diagnosis is made, the doctor will explain your status and recommend the best course of action to fit the diagnosis.

Dry Eye Exam

Do you find yourself with dry, itchy eyes?  Or suffer from chronic tearing and discomfort? These are all signs of a problem with chronically dry eyes.  Many people suffer from chronic dry eye, which is a term used to describe a condition in which the eyes either produce too few tears or they tear, but their tears are chemically imbalanced.  More often than not, it is a result of the natural aging process.  But it may be due to other conditions such as problems with the blinking reflex, use of certain medications, chemical or environmental conditions or some systemic health problems such as arthritis or Sjorgren's syndrome.  During your exam, a wide variety of procedures may be done which may include the placement of flourescein dye and the use of filter paper to help indicate the amount of tears being produced by your eye.  All these tests will investigate both the quality and quantity of tears produced by your body.  Once the problem is isolated, the doctors will work closely with you to find the best possible solution.  These exams last about half an hour.

Infant and Child Eye Exam

The care of children's vision differs from the care that we provide to adults.  The equipment that we use on children is specialized to both test vision without restricting their natural movements and minimize the natural fear of the exam.  Please give us a call if your child shows any of the following signs.

In an infant:  Poor focus on an object at 3 months of age, an eyelid that is drooping, or a family history of an eye disease.

In a child: Having a red eye with or without discharge, squinting to read or see small objects, complaints of blurred distance vision or eyes that fatigue easily.

We examine children at any age but comprehensive eye exams usually begin at age 2 1/2 years. So if your child is 2 years old and has not had an eye exam by our doctors, please call our office to make an appointment and start your child off on a course of proper eye care.
